Hate your boss? You’re not alone…

Half of British workers hate their boss and 2 out of 5 workers are thinking of going it alone, according to study by Moonfruit

Ever thought about ditching the day job and becoming the master of your own destiny? Of course you have – you wouldn’t be reading this if you hadn’t. Add hating your boss to the mix and the idea becomes all the more appealing.

We’re big proponents of entrepreneurial ambition here at Moonfruit. After all, helping people turn their genius idea or burning passion into an online business is what we do best.

Keen to find out just how many of you hate your boss and long to ‘go it alone’, we conducted a study to shed a little light on the matter. And the results are in…

A whopping 42% confessed to either regularly or sometimes experiencing feelings of hatred towards their boss and almost one in 10 (8%) said they hate them all day every day, making up half of all respondents.

In difficult work environments up and down the country, 39% of employees say their boss makes them feel stressed, with 33% feeling unappreciated, 27% ‘invisible’ and worryingly, a quarter (24%) go as far as saying they feel intimidated by their management.

The Moonfruit study, which polled 2,000 workers, also reveals two out of five of you are thinking about starting your own business.

The men surveyed were more willing to take the plunge and start a new venture, with 44% considering their own business, compared to 34% of women.

Female workers are more inclined to consider starting a business that turns a passion, such as food, design, fitness or even alpaca rearing into a career (36%), than men (29%), the study found.

Top reasons for looking to make a move:

1 Wanting to make their own money 50%
2 No longer wanting to have to answer to someone else 36%
3 Leaving their job to turn a passion into their careers 33%

Wendy Tan White, CEO and co-founder of Moonfruit, commented: “These findings make for some depressing reading. It’s shocking to see how many people spend their time at work being unhappy and feeling like either they or their work isn’t valued. UK bosses take note. Most of us spend more than a third of our day at work. A happy workforce will always be a more productive one.

“But if you can’t work it out with your boss, sticking around doesn’t need to be the only option. You can go it alone and it’s not as daunting as it sounds.

“And even if you don’t hate your boss, but are thinking about starting your own business, we will always be a champion of helping people to design their own futures and helping them to share their passions online.

“We believe having a website that genuinely reflects you and your business is the fastest track to a successful new venture. It’s heartening to see so many workers are thinking about it. Life’s too short to be unhappy in your job, so if you’ve got a passion you want to turn into a business, why not take the plunge online – the risk is lower and it can be something you practice at before quitting your job. We’ve seen thousands of customers do just that and completely change the quality of their lives.”
