7 great tools to create your own logo

7 great tools to create your own logo

A guide to making your own logo on the cheap and without professional design skills.

(Warning: This post contains some shameful attempts at graphic design)

Standing out in a crowded market can be hard, and to get the edge on your competitors you need a strong identity and a memorable brand.

A catchy name for your business is key, but to really stick in the minds of potential clients you need to create a good logo. Of course a professional a logo can be costly, but there are loads of affordable, sometimes free services out there waiting to be discovered.

How they work

The companies offering this are all actually very similar in format. Basically, you go to the logo design website, enter your company name, choose a logo icon from a choice of hundreds (or thousands) of designs, then edit the colour and add your effects. Easy as you like.

In fact, the whole process is usually over in a few short steps and you come away with a hi-res logo ready to use on your website. The only problem is that there are so many different companies clamouring for your attention (Pretty sure there’s some irony in this), that it’s hard to know who to choose. Well dear user, help is at hand.

I was tasked by Moonfruit chiefs to search out the very best logo making software around and with absolutely no design experience (so please be kind in the comments), come up with some logo ideas for our upcoming ‘Small Business Week’.

Here’s how that turned out:

Logo Garden

First up then is Logo Garden.

SoThink

This one differs in that you download the software to your computer, however, it is worth taking a look for the great editing tools and layout that looks a little bit Microsoft-ish.

It’s a bit pricier than the others too, but you can get a 14 day trial with no obligations.

The Noun Project

Not strictly a ‘logo design’ service as such, but they do provide a massive library of icons that you could steal magpie like. I’d recommend this because it lets you go a bit crazy and use multiple icons in one logo.
