Google announce that if your website is HTTPS or secure/encrypted, then they will give you a “minor” boost in their rankings.
What is HTTPS and why would I use it?
HTTPS or secure/encrypted web sites are mainly used where there is sensitive, personal or financial information and transactions involved, for example on your internet banking web site or DVLA web site.
For a site to be able to use HTTPS, they need to be validated by an official authority that they are the person or company that they say they are. Some official web sites have moved to using HTTPS to assure their authenticity for people visiting the site – e.g. Gov.uk.
What does the news about Google and HTTPS mean for me?
At the moment the impact of Google’s “trial” of adding whether a site has HTTPS into the ranking algorithm is negligible, “it’s only a very lightweight signal” and most sites and traffic will not be affected.
It’s unclear how Google intends to move forward beyond this trial at the moment but we are keeping an eye on the situation.
