KickStart your website: Jay Marsh Music

Wait, you haven’t heard about our new service where we build the site for you? Well, musician Jay Marsh did and he wants to tell you all about it and how it came to be.

So, what exactly is KickStart?

If you’ve never built a website before, getting started can be a daunting experience, which is why we decided to start giving our new customers a helping hand. Basically, you tell us all about yourself, about your idea and what you want to achieve through your website. Then we get our copy writers and designers to build it for you.

Jay Marsh was looking for a professional, well-designed-website to promote his work writing and producing music.

Here’s the man himself describing his journey as a musician and why he chose KickStart to showcase his talent:

“I never played sports or engaged in anything involving projectiles as a child. Combine this with a pair of pretty powerful glasses and you’ve got a winning combination for social exclusion and a descent into the dark dungeons of the Belfast Methodist college music department. The year was 1998 and I was 14 years old. I think it’s safe to say that this was the year I properly fell in love with music. I decided I had to be in a band and, in one form or another, I have remained in one ever since. Touring the charmingly dubbed ‘toilet circuit’ of London and UK for six years following university eventually took its toll, and I decided that I’d had enough of travelling around in a transit van with three other men-children. I needed stability I guess but I couldn’t give up on music either. So, I set about finding ways to turn the skills I’d acquired into something that could pay the rent. I settled pretty quickly on a mixture of writing commissioned pieces of music during the week (for TV, film, online videos, other artists, etc.) and gigging at the weekend.

“Gradually, as my confidence and contacts increased, I realised that I was going to have to do more than wait for gigs to be offered to me from friends, friends of friends and entertainment agencies. I knew that I was going to have to become a fully functioning one-man outfit. I saved up for a really excellent PA system and a van and suddenly became able to go and provide an entire evening’s entertainment for a wedding/party/corporate event completely on my own.

“Not that I don’t still really enjoy playing with my trio and with other bands when I’m asked, but ultimately I value independence above all else. And that brings me to the beginning of this year when I started to pull my new promotional material together and my discovery of Moonfruit’s KickStart service. I wanted a website platform that had content ‘updateability’ at its heart. From what I’d heard from a number of friends, this was something that Moonfruit did very well.

“I knew that if it was simple enough I’d be able to pick it up fairly quickly. What I didn’t trust myself to do was the initial design layout. I wanted some help getting that right and this is what my KickStart designer did really well for me.

“My website designer really ‘got’ what it was I wanted to achieve and came up with an appropriate vibe for the site. From there I found the process of moving things around and adding content pretty simple and actually quite good fun!

“I’ve had a great experience and I am delighted with the result. Not only that, but since the handover happened I have had a couple of technical queries which have been answered within hours. This makes me feel really confident about my ability to keep my site updated and fresh in the future.”
