A couple of weeks ago we launched our new website design makeover competition and boy did we receive some entries! So many, in fact, that we had to delay announcing the winner until today. And that winner is Miss Poppy Cakes
This London-based cake guru sells everything from bakewells and brownies to more exotic creations (pear and polenta anyone?) and bespoke cakes for all occasions. As well as supplying popular cafes in Greenwich and Shoreditch, owner Sarah says she has a loyal following of private customers.
You might think the site already looks a-okay due to the beautiful photography and amazing cakes, but Sarah says she’s been struggling for some time to identify the right colour scheme and create a sense of harmony on the site, adding that she is “simply stuck” and has “no new ideas”. Which is where we come in.
Miss Poppy Cakes stood out to us as there are many things that Sarah is doing right – she runs a successful small business and is looking to scale-up by selling at more markets; she’s made a good first stab of building her website with Moonfruit and given it a nice personal touch; she makes use of the shop and blog features; she’s active in pushing her products and keeping customers up-to-date via social media; and her products and photography are simply stunning.
There’s plenty of room for improvement, however. Sarah’s particularly keen for us to make the site reflect her business better than it does currently, linking it more closely with the end product – her wonderful cakes. We’ll therefore look to define where she stands as a business and who her audience is to help us develop a strong brand that’s consistent across the website and social media platforms she uses.
We’d like to thank all who entered – the response was overwhelming and you made it really difficult for us to choose a candidate.
For those who missed out this time – we’ll be running the competition again, so keep your eyes peeled for the next one.
You’ll also be able to learn some useful design tips and tricks from us in the meantime when we post to let you know how the makeover went, so keep an eye out for that too.
