Great News! Moonfruit acquired by Yell
Firsts things first. To all our wonderful customers, don't worry, we're not going anywhere! The Moonfruit you know and love will continue to be run by the Moonfruit team you know and love, but as part of a bigger group. Our product roadmap delivery will continue, and may even accelerate as Yell recognises the exciting things going on here and want to support and invest in that growth. And, as the team that founded Moonfruit, we'll be sticking around too and we are all really excited about what's to come both within Moonfruit and within Yell.
We founded Moonfruit in 1999 as a place to “share your passions” online. We wanted to democratise publishing on the web for small businesses and individuals. The last 12 years have flown by. Those of you who have followed our story know that like many small businesses before us, the path from startup to growth business has not always been a straight-forward one. The one thing we are sure of is this: it's our customers and community that have made us who we are and helped us grow rapidly in the past few years.
So far nearly 5 million websites and 230,000 shops have been built using Moonfruit. Over 500k people are currently using Moonfruit: 60% in the UK, 33% in the US and 7% in the Rest of the World. Millions more browse, transact and link to Moonfruit sites, together with our 18k twitter followers and 10k Facebook fans, the team here is proud to be part of the Moonfruit community.
We have been looking at the best way to accelerate providing our services to a bigger global SMB (Small Medium Business) audience and were heartened at the number of big SMB players in the US who became very interested in partnering with us. In fact so interested that they proposed "getting married" or I really should say, acquired (for those of you who have organised and negotiated around a wedding it's a similarly harrowing and joyful experience!)
So after discussion with several attractive and not so attractive suitors I'm very excited to announce we accepted a "proposal" from Yell Group and are excited to announce our marriage! Yell is a leading provider of digital services within the emerging local eMarketplace for consumers and SMBs across its operations in the UK, US, Spain and some countries in Latin America. Yell has 1.3m small business customers and earned £2bn in revenue in 2011, supported by 13,000 employees around the world and, most importantly for us, is an entrepreneurial corporate with the commitment to being a true global digital service provider which will better serve SMBs. Together we can provide better tools and services to help customers build and grow their businesses on web, mobile and social platforms.
Yell has made it very clear they are not just buying Moonfruit for its products and customers but for the Moonfruit team itself. There is a commitment to keep the team at Moonfruit together to continue innovating current and new digital products. Moonfruit will continue to run as a sub-brand of Yell.
We're committed to carry on providing an open and transparent service to our customers and to continue innovating with their input and support. With Yell’s resources and support behind us we will be able to provide additional services to help grow our customer businesses.
We love providing people with simple, design-led tools which allow anyone to create a great looking and effective website or shop. We've continued to listen to our customers and innovate our products. Our latest "light" ShopBuilder makes it super simple for small businesses to design, curate and publish an online shop simultaneously on the web, mobile and Facebook. And we're making our final steps to migrating fully to HTML 5. All our sites will render in HTML 5 on the iPad (for one) later in 2012, building on our mobile sites and Facebook shops which are already published in HTML 5.
We look forward to continuing our journey with you and helping your businesses flourish.
Many thanks
Wendy-Tan-White CEO and Co-Founder

Comments
Exciting times! It had become obvious that moonfruit couldn't continue as it was, and it's good that the uncertainty is put to rest. Congratulations to the founders for creating such a valuable product, and long may it continue!
All the best to the Moonfruit team! Exciting to see where the platform goes from here..
Here's to continued success and properity!
Keep up the good work and let's see even more great features added to the site builder tools!
Welcome to the Yell family! I am a senior level sales person in the US. Very excited to have your wonderful products to sell!
Thank you all! Heartened by your response we're going to keep on innovating...
@hoffmn01 Fabulous :) Be good to understand what you need
Welcome to the Yell family. Our US website
potential is HUGE ! From what I've read about
you we're now a much stronger player in
this space. On behalf of the sales teams I
work with, I look forward to working with
you.
great to see Yell acquire you, finally gives them something positive to sell........
YELL have just today released their BETA version e marketplaces for Oxford & Chicago, please can you confirm that they are NOT Moonfruit products............they have not been beta tested and full of errors, broken links etc.
All feedback sent to YELL but just hope your product set isnt underlying the BETA product we see today.
My gut feeling is this isn't great news for resellers as Yell's ability to promote the product to an existing customer base is huge.
As a designer on the platform it's not all bad - there will undoubtedly be a massive increase in those needing help?!
@msouth999 - no the emarketplace isn't ours. Yell have big plans and I'm sure you'll see exciting things from them in the months to come. I'm sure they'll iron our bug issues from the Beta, and thanks for passing the feedback to them directly. It's this customer feedback and relationship that will be key to building a digital future, which as you know, we're fully behind!
@Steve - I think there should be a big reseller opportunity from this. While many people like the DIY service, there is also another huge set that still want help in building and maintain their sites, either because they lack confidence or the time when running their own business. The more people who are aware of the service, the more people will need that support. We'll be looking at ways in the future of supporting our resellers more and bring them into that process with us, so they in turn can support users of our software. What you add in terms of design, expertise and focus is still of huge value to end users who don't have these things themselves.
Joe
I see this as bad news, I personally despise YELL, they are awful, they phone me nearly every month pestering me with rude customer service advisors to sign up to their yell website design service -- hopefully this will stop now as before I always said my website is built with moonfruit.
But I hope prices don't change, hopefully it should be ok if the moon fruit team is staying the same.
my son worked for yell, it was the worse time in his career history, so much so that he went back to civil engineering recruitment. Ive been with moonfruit since 2006, hope I don't have to start looking elsewhere...
Elliot and Om!,
While Moonfruit stand to benefit much from Yell, their resources and reach, what they liked about us was our ability to innovate our product consistently, communicate openly with our customers, and foster a sense of community.
Please be assured, that we don't see what we do or how we work with our customers changing. And, we have no plans to change packages or prices either.
For Moonfruit and our customers, it's business as usual!
Thanks ~ Walt
I would never have thought it, Moonfruit to Yell, oh dear.
Hello oldiesk8er, why 'Oh dear'?
We did have other offers, but Yell provided a much greater fit (small to medium businesses) and better guarantees over protecting the Moonfruit brand and business. That meant a lot to Wendy, Joe and Eirik.
Having built and nurtured the business over 12 years, they wanted to secure a good future for Moonfruit and our customers, and Yell's desire to expand its digital services offered that opportunity. So we view this joining of forces as providing a lot of positives for both businesses.
~ Walt
Will this mean that we may be quicker at getting one of our biggest asks on moonfruit - a profile/membership system so we can build dating sites and classified sites? Give Yell..a yell please :o)
ta Joe for comments, Znode EMP or HIBU is bad in its Beta stage (clearly no inhouse testing took place and it was rushed to BETA). I guess that Moonfruit will just be resold under HIBU light, HIBU medium and HIBU premium by YELL , hopefully built and commissioned by MF staff.
Pity you guys arent involved in EMP, Znode are not up to it in my opinion, they are enterprise based not SME based...hope you get some input to the EMP development otherwise YELL demise will lead to end of MF
Hi LCI1,
I'm afraid there are no current plans to introduce that kind of social networking element to the software, but I'm obviously not ruling this out completely for the future.
HTH,
Gary
Yell has been having a tough time lately losing out to Google, I do not see that changing any time soon. They are 're-directing' their business and probably looking at offering to build sites for clients (as part of their very expensive service)with MF but still run MF for the likes of us. I do not think long term its good, and as I only have a few sites with MF now I will be moving them away.
I liked MF because of its product and the people running it. However like many large corporations I dislike Yell (I also hate their cold calling) so I'm afraid it's adios.
Hi Glugwine,
As is pointed out in the post, and by Walt in the comments, existing Moonfruit customers have nothing to worry about. Although Yell are looking to do some interesting new things with our software under their own brand, Moonfruit will continue to exist in the way it does now.
HTH,
Gary
I was just about to use the MF system to build a couple of small sites for my clients who wanted the skills of a graphic/web designer (not developer) but could not afford the full custom build costs. Hmm, not sure about the YELL buy out for reasons above including lack of care for it's customers (in my opinion and experience) getting in on the great site builder system that MF is.
I'll be holting my progress with MF for the time being and utlising the other options.
Sorry, but I will keep an eye on developments.
I must say as a reseller I'm a little concerned. We thrive on being able to attract the 'small' businesses out there. With Yell now at the helm and their advertising clout it will mean small pickings for us resellers.
Mind you if they continue to phone you, then phone you and then phone you again they may well anger some people into not using them but I don't see that happening
Hi guys,
KPB: This has been addressed further up the thread, but I can confirm that customer service will continue to be supplied by us.
Martin: Yell are likely to offer the software under their own branding, but we don't think this will have a massive impact, if any, on our reseller customers. A few other resellers have discussed it on the Forum:

HTH,
Gary
hi Gary - ref your comment 28th May 2012 about YELL offering the software under their own branding. Is that your software as featured on YELLs beta release sites www.hibubusinessstore.com and .co.uk
if so will you be building the sites ordered via that channel?
Hi,
The websites offered on the Hibu Business Store don't use our software. The sale of our software through Yell/Hibu is still in the planning stage, but we will post more information about it when these plans are finalised.
HTH,
Gary
ta for quick response Gary......even though your answer has depressed me, i was really hoping that YELL / HIBU were going to ramp up the volume of Moonfruit websites from day 1 of the acquisition, clearly YELL board dont understand speed to market or need to reverse and salvage their declining revenue stream. they have a really good viable saleable product in MF (have done since mid May) and still not in a position to let their sales folk loose with a decent product to sell 1 month later.
why is Wendy not banging Mr P's and Mr B's table demanding a YELL saleable MF branded product portfolio now?
Congratulations to you guys.
It's a shame there is negative feedback for what should be seen as an excellent deal for Moonfruit, especially as it is based on unknowns & assumptions rather than fact.
It's very inspiring to see a business from small beginnings get taken in by a global player. Keep it up guys!
Congrats Wendy to you & your Team - Best wishes for the future !
Jeremy
Fact: Yell has been the single worst company we've ever dealt with. They are total liars! Good luck to the Moonfruit team.
Will Yell own our content or will we the customers still own the rights to our content such as photography and self made films or music?
Hi Jeff,
The terms and conditions of your account with us will not change, so you will indeed retain the rights to your own content.
HTH,
Gary
When will the prices go up? and will Yell allow for a free site still? Thank you.
Ah the joy of the internet! - that didnt take long, found an identical site already. And, just seen how much the deal is for! Is it really worth it for that amount guys? Surely you could have continued on the current path and earned a lot more than that sell price?
Despise Yell
Have dealt with them in the past, vary aggressive sales people who tell you what you want to hear then they don't deliver.
Seriously considering baling out of Moonfruit now.
Hi guys, we don't anticipate any price or package changes. As for Free sites, that won't change. Moonfruit will continue as normal.
James, I'm sorry to hear of your experience with Yell. They are under going a big restructure at present to improve how they operate as well as how they service their customers. But as for us, well Moonfruit will continue as we have done, providing regular updates to the software, innovating where it adds value, while doing our best to listen to and support our customers.
Thanks,
Walt
